Kamaʻāina Program
Our goal has always been to help balance Mauiʻs Axis deer populations, but our hope is that the value of that management extends throughout our paeʻāina, throughout our communities.
As we grow as a business and try to meet our management goals, we remain committed to finding ways to make venison more accessible to our local customers. Kamaʻāina translates to–child of the land and names our preferred pricing program for both fresh venison as well as sticks for all Hawaiʻi residents.
Although we work to maximize the amount of Kamaʻāina inventory available each month, we are also greeting more and more local customers daily, selling out our Restocks more quickly. If you are hoping to shop an item that is sold out, be sure to sign up for our Restock emails to be alerted ahead of our monthly Restocks, which usually occur on the Monday following the first Thursday of each month at 7 am HST.
Holo ʻAi Program
Holo ʻAi is the term for a traditional food bundle and can also mean to speed food to where it is needed. The Holo ʻAi Program started as a response to the instability created by the COVID-19 virus outbreak. Any successes this program has had thus far were only achieved through partnerships with incredible organizations and businesses—partners who helped store, move, cook, and share venison.
We want to mahalo these organizations, as well as a number of smaller kitchens, for their work in and out of this program to help holo ʻai within our communities:
Together, we were able to distribute over
153,000+ lbs of venison, 130,000+ meals,
into our communities to date.
Our Holo ‘Ai Food-Sharing Program is another way we are reimagining the role of Axis deer in our local food system.
Alongside our incredible team and community partners, we have restructured our operations and business model to further increase our capacity to answer the needs of food insecure areas of our communities with over 130,000 lbs of venison shared to date.
We view this shift, not only as a response to current and projected community needs, but as further operationalization of resilience and equity within our food systems.
